At Abbey College we are committed to the Every Child Matters agenda, with a curriculum which provides a broad and balanced experience for all. We are proud to champion progress at all levels, through a personalised approach from Foundation Learning through to A level.
At Key Stage 3 all students follow a curriculum which includes English, Maths, Science, Design and Technology, ICT, a Modern Foreign Language, History, Geography, RE, Art, Music, Drama, PE and a Social Studies course including personal development, citizenship and careers.
In English and Maths students are set in Year 7, with other subjects following suit in Years 8 and 9. All students are assessed at varying times throughout each term, and have minimum expectations which need to be meet by the end of the year. Parents are provided with regular feedback, through Go4Schools online, about student progress. In the first term of Year 9 students are advised which one of the two Academic Pathways he/she has qualified for. The pathways are designed to give your child the best opportunity of reaching his/her potential and getting good grades. The pathways are only relevant to the subject which students make preferences for (i.e. Option subjects) and are not linked to setting in the Core subjects: English, Maths, Science and PE. Students are guided towards the subjects in which they will gain the highest achievement and enjoyment. The pathways are:
|Achievement Pathway||In addition to the Core subjects, students study a package of 3 or 4 subjects. The objective being to gain at least 5 or more GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths.|
|Enrichment Pathway||In addition to the Core subjects students study a package of 4 other subjects which must include a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) and a Humanities subject. The objective being to gain both, at least 5 or more GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths, and the English Baccalaureate.|
In Years 10 and 11 students study the Core subjects, additional subjects, along side RE, Social Studies and PE. The additional subjects are made up of a variety of Level 2 qualifications including:
- BTEC Certificates (equivalent to 1 GCSE)/Extended Certificates (equivalent to 2 GCSEs
- Level 1 & 2 Functional skills
- And in some cases Level 1 Foundation Learning Qualifications.
